RMD Calculator

Updated September 2026 · Figures based on current IRS rules (SECURE Act and SECURE 2.0)

Find out exactly how much you must withdraw this year from your IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b). Enter your year of birth and your account balance on December 31 of last year.

RMD calculator

From your year-end statement (IRA, 401(k), 403(b), 457(b)…)

Quick answer: your RMD = your account balance on December 31 of last year ÷ the IRS divisor for the age you reach this year. At 73 the divisor is 26.5, so a $500,000 IRA has an RMD of $18,867.92.

How this RMD calculator works

The calculator follows the method in IRS Publication 590-B:

  1. It checks your RMD age from your year of birth: 73 for people born 1951–1959 and 75 for people born in 1960 or later. If you haven't reached it yet, it tells you your first RMD year.
  2. It works out the age you reach by December 31 of the year you're calculating.
  3. It looks up that age in the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table to get your divisor (the "distribution period").
  4. It divides your prior year-end balance by that divisor.

It also projects the next 15 years, assuming you take exactly the RMD each year and your account grows at the rate you choose. Because the divisor falls every year, the percentage you must take rises: about 3.8% at 73, 5% at 80, 8.2% at 90.

Which accounts need an RMD?

You calculate an RMD for each account separately. For IRAs you can add the amounts together and take the total from any one or more of your IRAs. For 401(k) plans, each plan's RMD must come out of that plan. The same "one or more accounts" flexibility applies to 403(b)s among themselves. More in the RMD rules guide.

Deadlines

Your first RMD can wait until April 1 of the year after you reach RMD age. Every other RMD is due by December 31. If you use the April 1 extension, you'll take two RMDs in the same calendar year — see when RMDs start.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my RMD?

Divide your account balance on December 31 of last year by the IRS divisor for the age you turn this year. At 73 the divisor is 26.5, at 75 it is 24.6 and at 80 it is 20.2.

What balance do I use for the RMD calculation?

The fair market value of the account on December 31 of the previous year, as shown on your year-end statement or Form 5498.

What is the RMD on $500,000 at age 73?

$500,000 ÷ 26.5 = $18,867.92.

Can I take more than my RMD?

Yes. The RMD is the minimum. Any extra you withdraw doesn't count toward next year's RMD.

Is the RMD taxable?

Withdrawals from traditional pre-tax accounts are taxed as ordinary income. The RMD itself can't be rolled over into another retirement account.

Do Roth IRAs have RMDs?

Not for the original owner. Beneficiaries who inherit a Roth IRA do have distribution requirements.
